Why Ludhiana is where India's winter wear is actually made

Ludhiana is not simply one option among several for winter wear — it is the cluster the domestic trade runs on. The city produces the large majority of India's knitted winterwear, and the reason is structural: yarn spinning, circular knitting, fleece brushing and raising, dyeing, printing, embroidery, cutting, stitching and finishing all sit inside a 15–30 km radius. A fleece quality can be knitted, brushed, dyed and cut in the same week without a single consignment leaving the city.

For a wholesaler that density is the whole commercial argument. It is why Ludhiana can turn a repeat colour in days rather than weeks, why a mid-season top-up is possible at all, and why the per-piece rate on a 320 GSM cotton fleece hoodie out of Ludhiana is difficult to match from Tirupur, Delhi/NCR or an importer. Tirupur is stronger on summer knits; Ludhiana owns the winter season.

How we quote the wholesale trade — plainly

Buyers from the wholesale market do not want a design consultation. They want a rate, a ratio, a delivery date and a bill. So here is exactly how we work.

Per-piece rate by slab. You get a rate per piece by style, GSM and quantity slab. It does not move after you have quoted your own buyer, and once a season booking is confirmed the rate holds for the season even if yarn moves against us. That last point matters more than anything else in a fleece year.

Standard size ratio. We pack to the ratios the trade actually sells — commonly S:M:L:XL at 1:2:2:1, or M:L:XL:XXL where the buyer's market runs bigger. Tell us your ratio and we cut to it, rather than making you re-sort cartons at your end and sit on unsold smalls in March.

Assorted colour lots. Colours can be assorted within a style so you can offer a range without committing a full lot to each shade. Custom shades need their own dye lot, so those carry a per-colour minimum — we will always tell you which of your requested colours are stock and which are not before you book.

Billing and transport. Full GST tax invoice, e-way bill where applicable, packing list showing the size-ratio breakdown per carton, and transport booked from Ludhiana with the LR copy shared on dispatch. Part-load or full-truck depending on the order.

The winter calendar — and why booking late costs you

Winter wear is a booked season. The buyers who do well are the ones who commit early, and the ones who chase stock in September pay for it twice — once in rate and once in whatever is left.

The rhythm is consistent. February–March is when ranges are finalised, samples approved and bookings confirmed; fleece is blocked here, before mill rates move on the season. March–Augustis production, and the earlier your slot the cleaner your dispatch. August–October is dispatch, so stock is in your godown for the October–January retail window. Repeat and top-up orders run alongside, and this is where Ludhiana's density earns its money — a repeat in a running shade can turn far faster than a fresh booking.

Book late and three things go against you at once: fleece is dearer because the mills have already sold their good rates, production slots are taken so lead time stretches, and your shade choice narrows to whatever is still running. We would rather tell you in February than take the order in September and disappoint you.

Exporting winter wear from India

The same fleece programme that supplies the domestic trade ships overseas. We are IEC-registered, with the LUT filed for zero-rated export invoicing, and we handle the Certificate of Origin, Commercial Invoice, Packing List and Bill of Lading in-house. Stuffing is at ICD Ludhiana or Dhandari Kalan, moving to Mundra or Nhava Sheva for sea freight, with air via Delhi for urgent restocks.

Winter is the season where the export calendar and the domestic one collide, and buyers who miss that pay for it. An overseas order needs 18–25 days of ocean transit on top of production, so a European or US buyer wanting stock on shelf for their autumn needs to book earlier than an Indian wholesaler selling into October. Work backwards from your retail date, not forwards from today — and talk to us in February either way.

Where shackets and quarter-zips fit in a wholesale range

The winter range that used to be hoodie plus sweatshirt is now four categories, and the two newer ones carry better margin precisely because fewer suppliers run them properly.

The quarter-zip has moved from golf and corporate into mainstream retail. It sells to an older and more premium customer than a hoodie, works as smart-casual where a hoodie does not, and the collar and zip make it read as a more considered garment for a modest cost difference. The shacket — shirt-jacket — is a genuine layering piece: heavier than a shirt, lighter than a jacket, and it extends your selling season at both ends into the shoulder months when a 380 GSM hoodie is too warm.

Both are worth carrying, and both are where make quality shows immediately: a badly set quarter-zip placket or a shacket cut in the wrong bonded fabric looks cheap on the rail next to the good ones. The quarter-zip lives or dies on the placket — the zip has to sit flat, the collar has to stand without help, and the rib has to recover. The shacket depends almost entirely on fabric choice: a bonded 2-layer knit gives it the body to hang like a jacket, where an unbonded fleece just reads as an oversized shirt.
