Ludhiana — India's knitwear capital, and why it matters for your sourcing
Ludhiana, Punjab is the largest hosiery and knitwear cluster in India, accounting for over 60% of the country's knitted apparel production by volume. The cluster has been building its specialisation since the 1950s — yarn spinners (Vardhman, Trident, Nahar, Oswal), circular knitting mills, fleece brushing units, ZLD-compliant dye houses, screen printing and embroidery units, and cut-make-trim factories all within a 15–30 km radius. That geographic density gives Ludhiana knitwear a structural cost and lead-time advantage on small-to-medium runs that Tirupur (woven apparel and home textiles), Bengaluru (premium woven), and Bangladesh (large-volume basics) can't match.
Vriddhi Enterprises operates within this ecosystem. We don't outsource yarn, knitting, dyeing, or finishing to unknown third parties — every supplier we use is within day-trip distance, has a 5+ year relationship with us, and goes through our quality assurance gate before fabric enters our cutting room. The result for buyers: no surprise off-site delays, tight confidentiality for private-label designs, and consistent fabric quality across repeat orders.
What "knitwear" covers — and what we manufacture
Knitwear is a broad category — anything made from knitted fabric (loops of yarn) rather than wovenfabric (interlaced warp and weft). That covers most of the apparel you wear daily: T-shirts (single jersey), polo shirts (pique knit), hoodies and sweatshirts (brushed-back fleece), sweaters and cardigans (flat-knit), thermals and innerwear (interlock and rib), leggings and pyjamas (jersey and rib), kids' knitwear. We manufacture across this entire range from the same Ludhiana facility.
For each knitwear category, the fabric, construction, and decoration vocabulary changes. We've published dedicated pages for the most-searched product types — T-shirt manufacturer India, polo shirt manufacturer India, hoodie manufacturer India, sweatshirt manufacturer India, oversized T-shirt manufacturer India — and we recommend reading the relevant product page for product-specific guidance on GSM, fabric, construction, and decoration choices.
Compliance and export readiness for knitwear buyers
Our knitwear production runs against OEKO-TEX Standard 100, EU REACH, and US CPSIA chemical limits. We source organic cotton from GOTS-certified Indian ginners for buyers who need the organic claim. We are scheduled to register on Sedex and undergo a 4-pillar SMETA audit in 2026 — and we welcome buyer-nominated SMETA, BSCI, WRAP, or amfori-BSCI audits at our facility against a committed first order.
For exports, we are IEC-registered with the DGFT, LUT filed for zero-rated invoicing, and HS coding for knitwear (Chapter 61 of the HS schedule) handled in-house. We ship FOB Mundra / Nhava Sheva, CIF, or DDP — and leverage FTA Certificates of Origin under India-UAE CEPA and India-Australia ECTA for buyers in those markets, typically saving 5–10% in landed-cost duty.

Frequently asked questions
Do you supply the wholesale knitwear trade?
Yes. Wholesalers, distributors and multi-brand retailers are a core part of our knitwear business — that is what a Ludhiana knitwear unit is built around. Per-piece rates by slab, standard size ratios, assorted colour lots, and plain or neutral packing where you intend to resell under another label. Winter knitwear is a booked season, so confirm February–March for the October–January retail window.
Is Ludhiana the knitwear capital of India?
Yes — Ludhiana, Punjab is widely known as the knitwear capital of India, producing over 60% of the country's knitted apparel. The cluster has specialised in hosiery and knitwear since the 1950s and today hosts yarn spinners (Vardhman, Trident, Nahar, Oswal), circular knitting mills, fleece-brushing units, dye houses, and thousands of cut-make-trim factories within a 15-30 km radius. This concentration is why knitwear buyers — from Indian D2C brands to overseas importers — source T-shirts, hoodies, sweatshirts, and winter wear from Ludhiana manufacturers like Vriddhi Enterprises.
What's the difference between knitwear and woven apparel?
Knitwear is made from knitted fabric (loops of yarn) — it stretches, drapes, and is typically used for casual, athletic, and home apparel. Woven apparel is made from interlaced warp-and-weft fabric — it has less stretch and is used for shirts, trousers, suits, jackets. Vriddhi specialises in knitwear. T-shirts, polos, hoodies, sweatshirts, sweaters, thermals, innerwear — all knitwear.
What knit fabrics can you source and work with?
Single jersey (T-shirts), pique knit (polos), interlock (smooth double-faced, used for premium polos and dresses), rib knit (1×1, 2×2 — for cuffs, hems, ribbed sweaters), brushed-back fleece (hoodies, sweatshirts), French terry / loop-back (athleisure), slub knit (texture interest), jacquard knit (patterned), plated knit (contrast inside / outside), mesh knit (sports / activewear), and mélange / heather knit (mixed-yarn for variegated colour effect).
Can you do sweater and cardigan manufacturing (flat-knit)?
Yes — sweaters and cardigans are flat-knitted rather than circular-knitted. We work with flat-knitting partners in Ludhiana who specialise in this. Standard knit gauges from 3GG (chunky) to 12GG (fine gauge). Cable knits, jacquard patterns, intarsia colour-work, and shaped sleeves all available. Lead time is 40–50 days due to the more complex knitting process.
What's the GSM range you manufacture knitwear in?
From 140 GSM (lightweight summer T-shirts) to 450 GSM (super-heavyweight winter hoodies). Most production sits in the 180–320 GSM range. For garment-specific GSM guidance, see our product-type pages: T-shirts (160–220 GSM), polos (180–240 GSM), hoodies (280–450 GSM), sweatshirts (280–400 GSM), oversized tees (200–260 GSM heavyweight).
Can you source organic cotton and GOTS-certified knitwear?
Yes — we source GOTS-certified organic cotton fabric from approved Indian ginners. The certification is on the fabric source (Sedex and OEKO-TEX certifications for our facility are scheduled in 2026). For buyers who need a formal GOTS scope certificate covering the manufacturing facility, we can subcontract finishing through a GOTS-scoped partner with a documented chain of custody — discuss upfront so we wire compliance in from day one.
What's the MOQ for knitwear manufacturing?
300 pieces per design / colour for export orders; 500 for domestic India. MOQ applies per SKU — a programme spanning 5 SKUs at 300 pieces each is a 1,500-piece order, which gets growth-brand tier pricing. For very small-batch sampling we can produce as few as 20–50 pieces in a development run, but per-piece cost is significantly higher at that scale.
How long does bulk knitwear production take?
25–30 days for simple knits (T-shirts, polos), 30–40 days for fleece knits (hoodies, sweatshirts), 40–50 days for flat-knit sweaters and cardigans. Add 18–25 days ocean transit for export to US/EU/UAE/AUS, or 5–7 days air freight. Total tech-pack-to-warehouse for sea freight is roughly 50–80 days; 35–60 days for air.
Do you handle private-label knitwear for overseas brands?
Yes — that's our core service. Custom woven main labels, embroidered side labels, branded hang tags, care/composition labels per EU & US regulations (fibre content, country of origin, RN/CA numbers, care symbols, GSM where applicable), and retail-ready hanger-pack or flat-pack with branded poly bags. Your knitwear arrives shelf-ready for retail or Amazon FBA warehouse.
