Choosing the right sustainable fibre — a manufacturer's honest guide

Most brands arrive at this decision with a fibre already chosen from marketing copy rather than from how the garment has to perform. Here is how we actually advise, in the order the question usually needs answering.

Organic cotton is the default and the safest choice. Familiar hand-feel, the best-understood certification system in the industry, works with every decoration method, and your customer needs no education. Pick it unless you have a specific reason not to. Organic and combed cotton in detail →

Bamboo is chosen for hand-feel: cool, heavy, fluid drape that nothing else quite matches at the price. Its environmental story is weaker than its marketing, and its labelling rules in the US are strict enough to have generated real penalties. Hemp has the most straightforward sustainability story of any fibre here — fast growing, low irrigation, few inputs, and a fibre so strong the garment breaks in rather than wears out. The catch is hand-feel: pure hemp jersey is stiff and close to linen, so blends do the real work. Indian supply is licensed and thinner than cotton, so lead times run longer.

Modal and lyocell are the premium-basics answer: silk-like drape, cool to the touch, and colour retention that beats cotton outright, which is why premium black tees use them. Recycled polyester (rPET) is the right answer for performance and activewear, where a natural fibre cannot do the job. It diverts PET bottle flake from waste and carries a mature certification system in GRS. It is still a synthetic that sheds microfibres, so we would not position it as the centrepiece of a natural-fibre brand story — but for a technical garment it is the honest sustainable option.

Recycled fabric: what GRS actually certifies

Recycled polyester is made by breaking down post-consumer PET — mostly drinks bottles — into flake, then chip, then filament. Recycled cotton is more often post-industrial: cutting-room waste mechanically shredded back to fibre. Because that shredding shortens the staple, recycled cotton is nearly always blended with virgin fibre for strength; a claim of 100% recycled cotton jersey should be treated with suspicion.

The Global Recycled Standard is the certification that matters, and it is worth understanding what it does. GRS verifies recycled content through a chain of custody with Transaction Certificates at each step, and it adds social and environmental criteria along the processing chain. It certifies that the recycled content is real — not that the resulting garment is environmentally superior in total. We can source GRS-certified recycled fabric where your buyer needs the certificate; we will also tell you when the certificate adds cost your particular customer will never ask to see.

What we do not claim

Greenwashing in Indian apparel manufacturing is common enough that being specific about our limits is a useful filter for both of us. So, plainly: the GOTS certification we work with sits on the fabric source — certified ginners and spinners — not on the Vriddhi facility. We supply Transaction Certificates that trace your shipment through that chain, which satisfies most buyers. If you need a GOTS scope certificate covering cut-and-sew, we route finishing through a GOTS-scoped partner with documented chain of custody, and that needs to be agreed at enquiry stage because it changes costing and routing.

Our production runs against OEKO-TEX Standard 100 limits, EU REACH and US CPSIA. We are scheduled to register on Sedex and undergo a 4-pillar SMETA audit in 2026, and we welcome buyer-nominated SMETA, BSCI or WRAP audits at our facility against a committed first order. We do not hold those certifications today, and we would rather say so here than let you discover it during vendor onboarding.

Regulation your sustainability claim has to survive

The compliance ground is shifting under eco-positioned apparel brands, and the direction is consistently toward substantiation. In the EU, the Empowering Consumers directive restricts generic environmental wording such as "eco-friendly", "green" or "climate neutral" unless substantiated, and the Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation introduces a Digital Product Passport for textiles — meaning per-product material data will need to exist in a structured form rather than as a paragraph on a website.

In the US, the FTC's Green Guides govern environmental marketing claims, and the Textile Fiber Products Identification Act governs what the fibre-content label may say — which is where the bamboo rule bites. In India, plastic packaging carries Extended Producer Responsibility obligations that affect how you package a domestic ecommerce order.

The practical implication for how you brief us is the same in every market: the durable claim is a specific, documented one. "GOTS-certified organic cotton, Transaction Certificate available" survives scrutiny. "Eco-friendly" does not. We build the documentation into the order so your claim rests on paperwork rather than adjectives.
